It was a cheap week for sure, but it was also a great time.  Some nights were better than others, thought on the whole it was clearly successful.  Emo’s was packed all week, and the turn out on the big nights was almost overwelming.  So I went to a lot of shows and want to spread the knowledge of who was good in what is often an overly obscure local music scene.  I hate to be top ten cheesy, but it seemed like a simple way to get the word out.  First, some bands that almost made the list:  A Few Nice Things, Good Times Crisis Band, Consider the Source, Nathan Singleton and his Sideshow Tragedy.  Now, here is the list of the ten best bands (that I saw, and you should see) at Free Week 2008…

10. At All Cost

I’m not a big fan of Metal, but At All Cost rocked it and their fans loved every minute of it (and I think those fans would kill me if I didn’t put them on the top ten list)

9. AM Syndicate

With their electroish sound on does sometimes wonder why AM Syndicate isn’t more popular than they already are.  With hints of the Cure and Joy Division this band will probably be showing up around town for a while.

8. Till We’re Blue and Destroy

This group of rockers is a local favorite.  Their synth/pop sound was turned on high in the lounge this week.  Go see these kids if you get the chance.

7. Ringo Deathstarr

This low-fi band is too upbeat to be drone rock, and to downbeat to be pop rock.  Regardless they have a heavy sound that combine with a couple of Lone Stars makes for a good combination.  Catch them at Emo’s later this month.

6. Many Birthdays

This blip rock band was a big surprise to me.  I haven’t heard much about this group, but I like what I hear.  Japanese-Texan electro is something I never thought would be kick ass.  They are playing at Mohawk pretty soon, so go see them already.

5. The Laughing

If there is a look to have in indielectro these guys have it.  Quick beats combine with synth, guitar, and sax make for a good sound, but the live show is what you wanna see.  This band is first on the list to understand presence on stage.  You get the crowd on your side first, and then rock the crap out of them.  They are opening for Yeasayer at Emo’s later this month, that’s a good combination.

4. Faceless Werewolves

Girl rock is one of my favorites.  You have the stereotypical token girls from the eighties, but this band has two gorgeous girls kicking ass on stage and taking names.  Primarily, the energy of this band is reason enough to go see them, and singing drummers can’t be beat.  So throw back a couple of bourbons and check them out at Beerland.

3. Scorpion Child

It’s more of an experience than a show when you see these guys.  I have been transported back to 1973, Scorpion Child is about to go on stage and southern rock is alive and well in Texas.  This band has the energy, the music, and the mustaches to rock your face of pretty much any day of the week.  So grab your joint and your crazy cool medallion and get your ass to this show before they are picked up by a major label.

2. Brazos

This is the other one of the bands that I was shocked did not receive top billing when I heard their sound.  Their band was tight, and their music was good.  I highly recommend that you get to one of these shows.  They have more of a pop sound, it’s not for the kids in the leather jackets, but you gotta get out to one of the shows, they say are coming in February.

1. Car Stereo (Wars)

Basically, I am not even going to explain this one.  If you haven’t seen Car Stereo (Wars), you really need to either get into the scene or get your head checked.
